THE Bulawayo-Nyamandlovu-Tsholotsho Taxis Association has poured R10 000 towards the Tsholotsho Road Rehabilitation Initiative (TRRI) as the community-driven project continues to gather momentum.
The association, represented by its chairman, Mr Goodman Nkomo, and secretary, Mr Majaha Fuzwayo, handed over the cash donation to TRRI treasurer Mrs Lifneth Moyo and compliance officer Mr Nkanyezi Ndlovu in Bulawayo on Tuesday morning.
“The road is our lifeline and as transporters we felt it was our obligation to join hands with the community and pour in something. Some have also put in something as individual operators,” said Mr Nkomo.
Mr Fuzwayo said it was encouraging that Government had also embraced the initiative and offered its full support following its official launch by Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo earlier this month.
Mrs Moyo said a smooth road would not only benefit the transport sector but also other sectors that drive the economy.
“The business will be easier to run now as your vehicles will no longer be having mechanical breakdowns due to the state of the road and this will stabilise or even result in low transport costs for the travelling public, leaving them with disposable income,” she said.
She said the business community would also benefit as the cost of transporting goods and services along the road to Tsholotsho would become more manageable.
Road works, being carried out in collaboration with Tsholotsho and Umguza Rural District Councils, have already commenced and are expected to be completed within 60 days, ahead of the rainy season.
The TRRI was launched as a community-driven intervention to rehabilitate sections of the road, which has been a major concern for motorists and traveling public.
