The Big Five show held at Esibayeni leisure spot in Bulawayo on Saturday night captivated an encouraging number of fans who attended, though several issues need to be addressed for future events to achieve greater success.

The event, which featured some of the best live performers from the Matabeleland region kicked off with Maskandi artiste Zinjaziyamluma, who performed with a live band, much to the delight of the audience. Zinjaziyamluma deserves commendation for opting for live music, as local fans generally prefer this over backtrack performances at live shows.

The country’s Maskandi king showcased his talent with a drummer and lead guitarist from KwaZulu-Natal, complemented by Nash on keyboard and Beke from Pumula on bass. With an entertaining dance line-up, Zinjaziyamluma proved his rightful place in the spotlight.

Following Zinjaziyamluma was Madlela, who thrilled fans with his engaging stage presence. When he attempted to leave the stage without performing his hit Ngamnanka uSaMamo, the audience called him back for an encore.

Godolude also delivered a memorable performance, showcasing his impressive dance moves and choreography. Magwaza and his Macrey Super Sounds kept the energy high, ensuring the tempo never dropped. Closing the night was SaMangwe and his Mlambos Express band, who delivered a mature yet entertaining show, reflecting their years of experience. Their dancing skills and stylish outfits were a highlight of the evening.

From this show, it is evident that the five artistes have curated something special that, if nurtured properly, has the potential to grow into something significant.

However, while the stage setup and sound were commendable, improvements in management are essential for the artistes to reap greater rewards. The show, which was advertised to start at noon, only began around 8pm due to management issues. Many fans who arrived early left the venue due to the late start. Additionally, when power went out, it took time to switch to backup generators, dampening the spirits of some attendees.

To ensure a smooth experience, sound checks should be conducted early, prior to fans arriving, so that everything flows seamlessly once the show begins.

Thabiso Ndlovu, the manager of the five artistes and the event organiser, expressed satisfaction with the show but acknowledged the need for improvement.

“On the management side, the show went well and the attendance was decent.

“We need to work harder to encourage people to support local artistes and fill up venues. The crowd enjoyed the show until 4am,” he stated.

Ndlovu added that they are actively seeking to attract sponsors by showcasing the talents of these five artistes. He said they are already working on plans for the next Big Five show. — @themkhust.
