WATCH: Umguza District Ward Six declared food secure

WARD Six in Umguza District has been declared food secure and removed from the Government’s food aid programme following a positive crop assessment by the Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee (ZimLac).

Ward councillor Busisiwe Brown revealed the development in an interview on the sidelines of a field day held at Mr Amen Zhou’s homestead on Wednesday.

The event, organised by Ward Six Agritex officer Mrs Boitumelo Ngwenya, showcased promising crop conditions across the area, with farmers anticipating a strong harvest.

Cllr Brown said the decision to remove the ward from food assistance was informed by improved agricultural performance driven by favourable rains and adherence to extension advice.

“We are expecting good yields this year, thanks to the rains and the villagers’ adherence to expert advice from Agritex officers. Our farmers are all expecting a good harvest, hence we have also been removed from the food aid programme by ZimLac,” she said.

Ward Six is home to more than 1 300 communal farmers, many of whom have embraced recommended farming practices, contributing to the improved outlook.

ZimLac is a Government committee that conducts annual rural and urban livelihood assessments, providing data on food security, nutrition and poverty, which helps inform policy decisions on drought response and social protection.
