CAPS United president Farai Jere has promised his team’s fans the 2024 Castle Lager Premiership title.

Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub in Bulawayo on Saturday, Jere said all was well at the club as evidenced by the fact that they were able to retain almost all their players who did duty in 2023.

Caps United he said had assembled a very strong side to be considered among the title contenders for this season.

“We are promising our fans the league championship this year. As being evidenced by the calm environment that is prevailing, we only lost one player,” said Jere.

He said the team position is one of calmness which is a key ingredient towards getting good results. Last year the team struggled for results in the first two thirds of the season but came guns blazing in the final 10 games to finish in eighth position.

It was a strong run on the home straight that coach Lloyd Chitembwe can build on.

“It is going to be the foundation of the team to win the championship. We are very happy with the team that we have assembled, it’s a team that will win us things,” declared the Caps United president boldly.

Jere dismissed the issue of aged players at the club. He expressed confidence that they would shine and help the club achieve success.

“What I want fans to know is a player’s age is as good as his performance, look at Peter Ndlovu when he broke into the Premier League he was performing like his older brothers. Something interesting if you have noticed, clubs are signing experienced players who can deliver. How old is Abouboukar (Cameroon striker)?” said Jere.

Jere said for football in Zimbabwe to be more exciting there was a need to go to the old youth club system and school competitions.

“What happened to the old system?” asked Jere.

Champions were groomed at youth clubs in towns where boys spent many hours playing informally before they were recommended by friends, the community, or identified by coaches for formal talent nurturing toward podium performance positions. School football afforded children regular competition from Grades 3 up to 7 right through to secondary school.

Jere dismissed financial challenges as things of the past and also thanked coach Chitembwe for believing in the club that gave him the platform to shine as a brilliant defensive link.

“How can people talk of financial problems when there is no player who has left us? When we had problems we came out. We have to thank Lloyd

Chitembwe for putting his reputation at stake, he came and saved the team from the embarrassment of relegation, he is a great coach among the best coaches around,” said Jere.
