GOVERNMENT has applauded international cooperation and development partner support in cushioning local communities during the lean season period (January to March) where households in drought-prone areas across the country have faced food insecurity following poor harvests last year.

Working closely with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other development partners, Zimbabwe has ensured that food relief reaches the most vulnerable communities in all provinces in an efficient, transparent, and accountable manner.

Speaking during a food distribution programme at Malalume area in Bulilima District on Thursday, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister, Cde Mercy Dinha, who was represented by Acting Chief Director Social Development and Labour Administration Mr Tawanda Zimhunga, applauded the partnership between Zimbabwe, Russia and WFP in implementing this particular programme, saying this reflects the importance of global solidarity.

“The continued support from the Russian Federation reflects a strong commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian assistance. It underscores a shared vision of alleviating hunger and reducing malnutrition, not only in Zimbabwe but across the globe,” she said.

“Our longstanding collaboration with WFP has yielded significant achievements, and with this renewed support from the Russian Federation, we are confident that we will make even greater strides in addressing food insecurity.”

Deputy Minister Dinha said the timely support from the Russian government and WFP was critical in strengthening assistance during the lean season, particularly to communities affected by food insecurity.

“The government of Zimbabwe has been working tirelessly to ensure that food assistance reaches all vulnerable households in a timely and efficient manner. In this regard, the support from the Government of Russia and the WFP during this response period is deeply appreciated and will not go unnoticed,” she said.

“This partnership stands as a shining example of how global solidarity can effectively respond to some of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time.”

Beyond addressing immediate needs, Government has said the contribution from global partners will also support long-term resilience-building strategies and aligns well with Zimbabwe’s broader development agenda, including Vision 2030, which aspires to transform the country into an upper-middle-income economy.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the Government and people of the Russian Federation for their unwavering support and generosity. Your contribution will have a meaningful impact on the lives of the people of Bulilima, providing them with much-needed relief, stability, and nourishment during this challenging period,” Cde Dinha added.

“Let’s continue to work together in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and solidarity. Together, we can build a future free from hunger and food insecurity.”

Russian Deputy Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Sergey Kuzin, represented Moscow while WFP was represented by head of external relations, Ms Ifeoma Garba.

During the event beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Government and its development partners for the assistance. Headman Mgqibelo Moyo said the food relief programme came at the right time to save lives and hoped households would harvest enough this time around to sustain them up to next year. While some villagers hoped for a good harvest this year following good rains, others said they will continue seeking relief aid as their crops were damaged by heavy rains.
