MORE than 100 athletes from 10 provinces are expected to take part in the Zimbabwe footgolf national tournament set for Harry Allen Golf Club in Bulawayo from Thursday to Friday.

Footgolfers will participate in four categories which include putters (primary school), juniors (secondary school), seniors and masters both in the men and women’s categories.

Outstanding players will be selected for a national team that will play in an international tournament set for Victoria Falls on August 25.

The event will run for five days.
The Zimbabwe Footgolf Association vice president Senzele Ndlovu said that the sport is gaining momentum though they are facing financial challenges.

“This is a new sport it has not been easy to introduce it but we have managed to spread the sport in all provinces and people are embracing it well, we are looking forward to introduce footgolf to the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) and National Association for Secondary School heads (Nash) so that it can be played in schools like all other sports,” she said.

Ndlovu said that they are looking forward to a successful national tournament and urged people to join the sport.

“We are having a challenge with the participants from 13 to 18 age-groups, we are due to participate in the Junior World Cup next year but we do not have participants who will represent us, we are hoping youths will join footgolf,” said Ndlovu.

To ensure inclusivity, the association offers programs tailored for beginners, children, teenagers, women, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

The country has actively participated in regional tournaments in South Africa.
