THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) Acting Commissioner-General, Mr Misheck Govha, has called on the business community and the general populace to cultivate and sustain a culture of tax compliance, saying this is critical for the country’s development trajectory.
Speaking at the Zimra Stakeholders’ Breakfast Meeting in Bulawayo, Mr Govha said strengthening compliance would enhance revenue collection and support Government programmes aimed at economic growth and national transformation.
“What is now required is for the business community—and indeed the entire population of this great nation—to cultivate, nurture, and sustain a culture of complying with tax laws. This is essential to facilitate national development,” he said.
Mr Govha stressed the importance of stakeholder engagement platforms, noting that they provide an opportunity for dialogue, collaboration and mutual growth between the tax authority and businesses.
“I strongly believe this platform offers a wonderful opportunity for business to forge meaningful synergies with the Authority and to give us feedback on the areas we need to improve.
“As we share breakfast and discuss matters of national importance, far beyond the realm of tax audits and compliance checks, I am confident that we will strengthen relationships and unlock practical business opportunities,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to fully utilise such engagements to explore how industry and tax administration can work together in advancing economic development.
Mr Govha commended the private sector for its continued contribution to revenue collection, which he said remains vital in supporting Zimbabwe’s economic revival efforts.
“As Zimra, we commend business for the hard work and the tremendous contribution you have made towards revenue collection, in support of the country’s economic revival efforts,” he said.
He added that Zimra has consistently invested in modernising its systems and processes to make it easier for taxpayers to meet their obligations.
“Zimra has always invested in initiatives that make it increasingly convenient for taxpayers to conduct business and meet their obligations.
“We have witnessed a major shift with the Tax and Revenue Management System (TaRMS).
“We continue to have client engagements and revamp our systems.
“We have become client centric and continue to improve our client relationships through our tax awareness and education drive,” he said.
Mr Govha encouraged those who are not yet compliant to regularise their tax affairs, emphasising that compliance ultimately benefits businesses.
“If you have not been tax compliant, I urge you to do so. We have a team of professional staff ready to assist you. Compliance is actually beneficial for your business in the long run,” he said.
He also underscored the need to rebuild a strong sense of tax responsibility across all sectors of the economy.
“It is also high time we reignited tax morale across all sectors of the economy so that we benefit current and future generations of Zimbabwe,” he said.
