WANEZI High School in Insiza District is experiencing crippling water problems as Wanezi dam which was damaged by floods early this year has not been rehabilitated, school authorities have said.
Surrounding communities with about 70 villages who depend on the dam, are also facing water problems.
Wanezi High School headmistress, Miss Dorcas Kumalo, said the shortage of water was affecting the teaching of practical subjects such as agriculture, among others.
“The biggest challenge we are facing at the moment is water shortages. As you are aware Cyclone Dineo affected us and washed our dam away. It is difficult to operate with such water shortages at a boarding school .We use the water for various important projects and at the moment there is little progress. We have a garden which used to supply us with vegetables and right now we are buying from town,” said Miss Kumalo.
She said the institution tried engaging responsible authorities to rehabilitate the dam but that hasn’t yielded any results.
The headmistress said they have since started drilling boreholes to mitigate the problem.
“The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) officials came here and said they will try working on something but so far nothing has been done. We are looking for donors because they quoted the dam for $1,8 million dollars” said Miss Kumalo.
Last month, Matopo High School authorities and villagers from Matopo expressed concern at the failure by Government to repair a bridge across Tuli River which was damaged by floods early this year.
They said they are afraid that pupils and school activities may be affected as the rainy season approaches.—@PrinceNkosi102
