Critical power outages being experienced countrywide are contributing to the erratic water supplies in Harare, an official said yesterday. Harare City Council principal communication officer, Mr Michael Chideme, said their pumping capacity was compromised by the current excessive power shortages.
“We are still on the road to improve our water delivery; most suburbs are going for 24 /7 without electricity in Harare, resulting in the Harare City Council failing to pump water to its residents.
“The joint venture we were recently pushing with a local company to supply potable water to northern suburbs in the city, is still in progress. The council has approved it and we are now waiting for the investor to finish up paper work and then we start work,” said Mr Chideme .
He encouraged Harare residents to pay their bills in order for the city to rehabilitate equipment and provide better service.
Early this year, Harare commissioned three pumps at Morton Jaffray, which increased output by 100 million litres to 500 million litres per day.
The plant has a capacity to produce 614 million litres per day.
