Water shortages have returned to haunt Masvingo City, with some areas going for close to a week without supplies owing to recurrent breakdowns at the Bushmead Waterworks plant on the shores of Lake Mutirikwi.
Late last year, the city went for close to a month without water after another breakdown at Bushmead.
Residents have now resorted to fetching water from unprotected sources and uncertified boreholes.
Mayor Councillor Collen Maboke last week said the problems were temporary and normal supplies would be restored soon. He said the problem was initially caused by a power cut at the feeder supplying Bushmead after electrical poles were felled by strong winds.
“Between Sunday, January 20, 2019 and Wednesday January 23, 2019 there were disruptions in pumping and treatment at Bushmead Waterworks,” said Cllr Maboke in a statement.
“The erratic supply of electricity to Bushmead Waterworks has led to council being incapacitated to supply water consistently to the city. As a result, the city council has not been able to pump enough water from Bushmead to the city since Sunday evening.”
