The Manchester United and England legend was in Tottenham to watch the first of three games in the capital — but didn’t receive a good reception. Rooney thought he would just be enjoying an afternoon out until he was projected onto the big screens across the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Fans across the stadium didn’t take too kindly to him, booing and jeering as he smiled in the stands.
The game was the first of three in the British capital with the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts facing off at Spurs’ plush ground. Next week, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars clash in Tottenham before the Jaguars round out the tour against the Houston Texans at Wembley on October 18.
Rooney joined a host of sporting stars at the NFL on Sunday, with Olympic legend Simone Biles also in attendance to support her husband Jonathan Owens, who plays for the Colts.
Ex-Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale also headed to Tottenham for the game.
Ramsdale, who was kicked by a fan at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023, is back at Southampton following a loan at Newcastle —but is yet to play this season
The goalkeeper was not the only ex-Arsenal ace to turn up, with Folarin Balogun also in attendance, while Bournemouth’s David Brooks also came along.
Team GB rising star Amy Hunt headed to Spurs for the NFL match-up, as well as rugby players Marcus Smith, who had a trial at Tottenham as a teenager, and Finn Russell.
Former Love Island stars Ella Thomas, Lucinda Strafford and Harry Cooksley also came along.
Rooney, meanwhile, was spotted sitting near former Red Devils team-mate Roy Keane, who has been a long time supporter of the NFL.
And earlier in the game, Noel Gallagher was showcased on the big screen, and he got a better reception than Rooney as fans blasted out Oasis hit ‘Wonderwall’.
Fellow artist Mimi Webb sung the national anthem before the game in front of almost 60,000 at Tottenham.
Rooney was assumed to be supporting Washington after his time in MLS playing for DC United in the American capital.
The ex-England captain played for them from 2018 to 2019, later returning as their head coach in 2022.
After overcoming a slow start in the capital, the Colts romped to a 30-13 win thanks to two touchdowns from star running back Jonathan Taylor and one from quarterback Daniel Jones.
Washington’s quarterback Marcus Mariota, who was already replacing star man Jayden Daniels, hobbled off injured in the first quarter leading to debutant Alkan Kaliakmanis stepping into the game.
Despite a beautiful 47 yard touchdown pass to Treylon Burks in the second half, the Commanders couldn’t keep up with the Colts as they limped to a convincing loss in front of a predominantly home crowd in North London. —Sun.
