Newly-appointed Sables skipper Denford Mutamangira believes last week’s morale-boosting Africa Cup victory over Kenya will most likely have a positive effect on his tenure as leader of the team going forward.
The veteran prop took over the reins from the retired and now Zimbabwe Cheetahs gaffer Daniel Hondo on the eve of the encounter against Kenya and believes the 28-20 win settled any nerves or doubt he might have had prior to the clash.
“Obviously, there were some nerves and pressure prior to the game, but I believe the win settled all that and my main priority now is to do the best I can for both the team and country. I have a big role to play both as a player and a leader.
“It has always been a dream and goal of mine to lead my country and even before that I was one of the senior players of the team. So, I am well versed with the ins and outs of the team.
“This will surely aid my quest to be the best leader I can be,” said Mutamangira.
While the game wasn’t a vintage performance from the Sables, the team managed to kick-start Mutamangira’s reign as captain on a positive note, beating Kenya 28-20 at Prince Edward High School last week.
The trio of Sanele Sibanda, Riaan Oneal and Tafadzwa Chitokwindo all planted a try each, while vice-captain Tich Makwanya chipped in with two conversions and two penalties.
Substitute Lenience Tarembwa also chipped in with a conversion.
On his views of the team’s performance and Africa Cup prospects, Mutamangira said: “It wasn’t the best of performances despite the win and we have a lot of work to do before our next encounter against Tunisia next month.
“We are a team rebuilding, but one full of potential. The fitness levels definitely have to improve, while our running game and defence still need lots of work,” he said.
Mutamangira has vowed to do all he can to help the team improve and said he has no qualms about occasionally going to his predecessor Daniel Hondo for tips and advice.
“When Danny was still captain, I was also among the senior players and we would occasionally talk.
“I see no reason why this has to change as we good friends who talk frequently and I will most certainly reach out whenever possible,” he said.
Mutamangira left for South Africa last week for a try-out with Sharks Academy.
“I have been given two weeks off from the Tunisia preparations and will be with Sharks Academy for trials.
“It is an opportunity I am relishing because the exposure alone will surely go a long way in refining my game both as a player and as a leader.
“I have played locally and in the Scottish Premier League with AYR rugby Club and hopefully all these experiences will help me keep improving,” he said.
