We had a lapse in concentration: Kwinji

THE Mighty Warriors’ dream of securing a spot in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the second time came to a painful halt on Wednesday after they were defeated 5-4 on penalties by Angola at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The loss came after Zimbabwe had initially taken a 2-0 lead in the match, only to be stopped in their tracks by a late goal from Angola, which sent the game into penalties.

Zimbabwe, who lost 2-1 in the first leg in Luanda, needed a two-goal margin win to overturn the deficit.

They looked on course to do so when Ethel Chinyerere scored a brilliant goal in the 35th minute and Christabel Katona doubled their advantage just before half-time. However, their failure to capitalise on early chances in the second half, notably through Rutendo Makore proved costly.

Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda believes they lost concentration after Angola pulled one goal back.

“We had the game in our hands but I would say it was a lapse in concentration that cost us the game. It’s quite painful to lose the game on a penalty shootout but that is part of the game,” said Sibanda.

Zifa President Nqobile Magwizi commended the Mighty Warriors for their fighting spirit despite the disappointment.

“To our Mighty Warriors, you have represented our nation with unwavering honour, pride and resilience.

Though the outcome may not be what we hoped for, you lifted our flag high and inspired us all,” Magwizi said in a message to the team.

During the shootout, Zimbabwe’s Nobukhosi Ncube, Mavis Chirandu, Daizy Kaitano, and Yolanda Kanyai all converted their spotkicks successfully. However, goalkeeper Lindiwe Magwede, who had been a key performer throughout the match, missed her penalty, handing victory to Angola, who scored all five of their penalties with composure.

Angola, who have now progressed to the final round of qualifiers, will face Malawi over two legs for a chance to secure their place at next year’s prestigious tournament.
