‘We want to contribute to rugby’s success’

THE Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Africa Cup begins at Harare Sports Club’s Machinery Exchange Stadium.

South Africa’s Blitzbok are certain to be the main star attraction.

The two-day tournament is doubling as qualifiers for next year’s Paris Olympics and South Africa will today line up against 11 other nations in hopes of booking the sole ticket on offer for the winners of the tournament.

Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire and hosts Zimbabwe round off the participating teams

First Mutual Holdings Limited’s have been roped in to sponsor the tournament, and Zimpapers Sport caught up with the group marketing and strategy executive, Farayi Mangwende, for a chat on what this tournament means for national team and the sport.

Q: What is FMHL’s involvement in the upcoming Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers?

A: FMHL is proud to be a sponsor and active participant in the upcoming Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers. We were confronted with a great opportunity to support our Zimbabwean team, we decided to take it and stand with the nation in supporting our team in the way we could. We also see this as an opportunity to showcase the immense talent that Zimbabwean rugby has to offer on an international stage.

Q:  What made you choose to support the Cheetahs?

A: The decision to support the Cheetahs was not made lightly. We were impressed by the team’s dedication, resilience and their significant impact on the rugby community in Zimbabwe. The Cheetahs have a storied history of success and a strong presence in the world of rugby. Additionally, their commitment to nurturing local talent aligns perfectly with our values. We saw the potential for a fruitful partnership, and we believe that by supporting the Cheetahs, we can contribute to the continued growth and success of rugby in Zimbabwe.

Q: What are you most excited about with the Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers being held locally?

A: We are tremendously excited about the Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers being held locally for several reasons. Firstly, it provides Zimbabwean fans with a unique opportunity to witness world-class rugby action right in their own backyard. This event also serves as a platform to unite the nation in support of our talented athletes as they compete on the global stage. Moreover, hosting such a prestigious event showcases our country’s capabilities as a host nation for international sporting events, contributing to our reputation as a sports-loving nation.

Q: Can you tell us more about the qualifiers and where fans can catch the exciting rugby action?

A: The Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers promise to be an exhilarating showcase of rugby talent from around the world. The event will feature top international teams competing for the coveted spots in the Olympics. Fans can catch all the action at [venue name], where matches will be held from September 16-17, 2023. Additionally, the matches will be broadcast on national and international sports channels, ensuring that fans who can’t make it to the venue can still enjoy the excitement from the comfort of their homes.

Q: What are the benefits of rugby and sports in general that you want to promote?

A: Rugby and sports, in general, offer a myriad of benefits to individuals and society as a whole. These include promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, fostering teamwork and discipline, and providing opportunities for personal growth and development. Through our support for rugby and sports, we aim to encourage these values among Zimbabweans, especially the youth. Furthermore, sports have the power to bridge divides, unite communities, and instil a sense of national pride. We believe that by promoting sports, we contribute to the overall well-being and unity of our nation.

Q: Which teams are more excited to see the Cheetahs match up against, and will we be seeing FMHL at the games supporting our national players?

A: We are excited to see the Cheetahs match up against a variety of talented teams in the Sevens Rugby Olympic Qualifiers. While all the matchups are highly anticipated, there is particular interest in seeing the Cheetahs face off against strong international competitors such as South Africa. These matchups will be a testament to the Cheetahs’ skill and determination.

As for our presence at the games, yes, FMHL will be there in full support of our national players. We believe in being actively involved in the events we sponsor, and you can expect to see our representatives at the games, cheering on our athletes and engaging with fans.
