ALICK Macheso’s camp has assured its fanbase in South Africa that the sungura superstar will be back in Mzansi once the tension and madness over the xenophobic attacks pass.
Macheso has built a loyal and appreciative fan base in South Africa, thanks to years of consistency and hard work.
However, he has been forced to suspend or cancel some of his shows in Mzansi due to the ongoing wave of xenophobic violence, which has displaced thousands of foreign nationals, including Zimbabweans.
Macheso’s spokesperson, Tich Makahamadze, said the band values all its fans around the world and their safety will always be a priority to them.
“South Africa is like a second home to us. Over the years, we have managed to build a strong fan base across several provinces, from Venda to KwaZulu-Natal, which speaks volumes about the appeal of the Orchestra Mberikwazvo brand,” said Makahamadze.
“We perform there regularly but recently we had to cancel our appearance at the Silala Festival despite all contractual obligations having been fulfilled.“We also understand that the unrest has not yet subsided in some areas, and that has affected us.
“We spoke to the organisers and reached a mutual agreement because it was unsafe to proceed when the safety of our fans could not be guaranteed.” Makahamadze said the band would only return to South Africa once the security situation has normalised.
“The issue of xenophobia has not only attracted the attention of Africa but also the rest of the world.
“In this case, we had to prioritise the safety of our supporters.
“There are circumstances in life that are beyond our control, and these should never be taken lightly.”
He said Orchestra Mberikwazvo was ready to welcome Zimbabweans returning from South Africa and hoped its live shows would provide them with comfort during a difficult period.
“As it stands, we genuinely need to show love to our fellow Zimbabweans returning home from South Africa.
“The trauma many of them have endured is heartbreaking, as some were treated badly and forced to flee.
“We can only become a stronger nation if we rally behind one another during these trying times.
“As Orchestra Mberikwazvo, the best therapy we can offer is music.
“We encourage the returnees to attend our live performances so that, even for a few hours, they can find comfort, healing and a sense of belonging.”
Makahamadze also urged Zimbabweans to support those returning home after losing their livelihoods.
“Some of them came back empty-handed after leaving behind their property and belongings in South Africa.“It is a situation that calls for all of us to join hands and assist those in need.” Despite the disruptions caused by the unrest, he said Orchestra Mberikwazvo remained focused on its scheduled activities.
“For now, our main priority is the Cheso Power Festival scheduled for July 31 in Harare.
“Preparations are progressing well and all the participating artists are eager to perform.
“If there are any changes, we will communicate them in due course.”
He added that the Cheso Power Festival, which celebrates Macheso’s enduring contribution to Zimbabwean music, is expected to become an annual event. “We want to make this an annual celebration. “It is important that we honour our music legends while they are still with us. We are grateful to our partners and sponsors who are working tirelessly to ensure the festival is a success.”
Kurai Makore, Freeman, Peter Moyo, Ndolwane Super Sounds, Bling 4, Xiba, Chillspot Family, Tocky Vibes and Killer T are all expected to perform, promising fans a diverse and entertaining showcase.
