Police will not hesitate to arrest Harare East legislator Terence Mukupe if they receive a court order to that effect, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said yesterday.

This comes after Harare magistrate Mr Francis Mapfumo on Wednesday said the legislator must be arrested and answer to charges of instigating violence against the police by youths in Mabvuku recently.

Mr Mapfumo said this as he granted bail to seven Zanu-PF youths accused of invading land in New Tafara.

Although no court order had by yesterday been received by police to that effect, police said they would execute any order according to its submission.

She said, “Any court order would be executed as submitted or written on what should be done.”

While granting bail to the seven, Mr Mapfumo said the violence, which State said was done “Boko Harare” style, was incited by Honourable Mukupe.

“It is the court’s view that the police should arrest him than make these accused suffer for his iniquities,” the magistrate said.

The magistrate granted $50 bail each to the seven party members, and they were ordered off the land they had invaded and to report every Friday to ZRP Mabvuku.

The seven who were charged under the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act for criminal trespass, are Jonasi Jonasi, Brian Mungwari, Richard Yuda, Emmanuel Kamuchira, Darlington Mutambara, Nevedi Takundikana and Linah Munhenzva.

MP Mukupe allegedly led a group of youths who besieged Mabvuku Police Station where they demanded the release of fellow members arrested for invading land belonging to the City of Harare, but leased to Shelter Zimbabwe. It is alleged that MP Mukupe ordered the officer-in-charge of Mabvuku Police Station to take off his uniform if he wanted to be a politician.

Prosecutor Mr Michael Reza alleged that on August 3, the youths invaded an open space in New Tafara and erected cabins.

They also apportioned the land among themselves and planted billboards indicating they had taken over the area.

They threatened violence against the police and Shelter Zimbabwe.

They were later arrested.
