Wenger to be given £20m for signings

LONDON. — Arsene Wenger will be given a £20m January transfer budget to help kick start Arsenal’s season. Gunners boss Wenger has made a new centre half top priority on his shopping list with a holding midfielder likely to follow next summer.

But Wenger will have to strengthen his back four in the next window after realising he made a mistake in the summer by not replacing Thomas Vermaelen.

That has left the North London side woefully short in defence with Nacho Monreal having to fill in at centre half and they are desperately trying to recruit for January.

Arsenal have got Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on their hit list while Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar could be available cheaply. They are unlikely to be able to land a bigger name in January with more funds to be made available next summer for more reinforcements.

Arsenal are also set to launch a stunning £30million January raid on Barcelona for duo Pedro and Dani Alves, who are both being followed by Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Gunners are in dire need of reinforcements following a poor start to the Premier League campaign, and Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash in order to appease the number of calls for his head from fans and pundits.

The Frenchman’s first priority is to sign a new right-back following a long-term injury to Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers’ transition to centre-back, and Alves has emerged as his top target. — The Mirror.
