We’re still the mix, says Chitembwe

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe maintains his team remains firmly on course in this year’s Castle Lager Championship race after picking a valuable point in their goalless draw away at FC Platinum.

This was their second stalemate in as many weeks, but the Green Machine said it was a point gained, and not two dropped, at the home of the championship leaders.

The race took an interesting twist as former champions Dynamos took advantage of the stagnation at the top to move to within four points of the leaders.

However, Chitembwe yesterday said he was not worried about the permutations.

“We are happy with what we got at Mandava. Sometimes it’s not about the points dropped, but about being competitive,” said Chitembwe.

“We are satisfied with where we are, we are still among the top contenders. So there is no reason why I can’t be happy with all the effort that we are putting as a team. From day one it has all been about the race, but what I know is the title is not won by taking the lead at some point during the course of the season.

“Of course, it will be good if we are to lead, but it’s not a guarantee that you will finish at the top come end of season.

“To me it’s early to talk about these things. I think the last quarter or probably the last five games of the season are the ones which should really define the destiny of the title. For us, we are happy we are getting the points and keeping up with the pace.”

Makepekepe host Tsholotsho in their next match on Thursday at the National Sports Stadium, looking to bounce back to winning ways.

Dynamos are enjoying a good run after goals from Godknows Murwira and Kudzanayi Nyakasaka secured them another set of maximum points at Rufaro on Sunday.

However, the Glamour Boys believe they are still work in progress.

Assistant coach Murape Murape yesterday said the technical team still wants more from their charges.

“I am happy with the way the team has been playing of late. The results have been coming, but as technical team, we are not satisfied yet with whatever we have done at the moment,” said Murape.

“There is more work to be done; we have to deal with the urge to get complacent.

“It’s not about winning five games in succession, we are not even looking at that. It’s a fact we started the season badly and right now we are trying by all means to recover the lost ground.

“So, if we are to look where we are coming from, it doesn’t make sense to start bragging about being in the race.

“Remember we have already been ruled out of this race, so we are not focusing on that. We have been branded ‘the worst Dynamos ever’ considering the way we started. So the focus is on improving our game.

“It’s good we are getting the results, but we are still work in progress.”

DeMbare moved into fourth position, swapping places with ZPC Kariba who lost 1-0 at Ngezi Platinum. There are reports from ZPC Kariba that their coach Sunday Chidzambwa is getting fed up with the interference from the management over team selection.

The same alarm was raised by Saul Chaminuka last year, before he was relieved of his duties following a poor run of results.

ZPC Kariba have not won in their last three outings and sources said Chidzambwa has threatened to quit the side if the situation persist.
