WESTERN Commonage Police Station lifted the inaugural ZRP Bulawayo Commander’s football trophy after beating Queens Park Police Station 2-0 in a pulsating final played at Ross Camp Stadium on Wednesday.
Western Commonage got their goals through Sipho Moyo and captain Malvern Mzezewa, while Queens Park, coached by the officer-in-charge of the station Fiso Siziba, suffered the heartache of a penalty miss by Tawanda Mudefi when the score line was still 1-0.
For their efforts, Western Commonage received a floating trophy and $120 courtesy of Townshend and Butcher. Queens Park went back to their base with $80 while third placed Nkulumane, who beat Mzilikazi 3-0, collected $40.
In the main curtain raisers’ match featuring women’s teams, guest team Burrow Jets buried the police side 3-0 to claim $60. The police women’s side walked away with $20. The cash prizes in the women’s match were courtesy of acting police officer commanding Bulawayo Province Chris Gora.
Townsend and Butcher promised to roll out sponsorship for women’s teams next year following a request by Gora.
The Propol’s juniors and senior officers’ trophy had to be decided through a penalty shootout after the two teams were deadlocked 1-1 after regulation time.
The junior officers went ahead through Edmore Matsunge before their seniors equalised late into the game through a well taken penalty by Kennedy Thebe.
Thebe was to score again in the penalties that went into sudden death. Peter Mandityira also scored for the senior officers in “normal” penalty kicks while the junior officers got their two spot kicks from Siziba and Joshua Mugozhe.
Brighton Tshuma scored the decisive kick for the senior officers’ 3-2 win and ensured that their captain Marshall “Tarino” Dube walked to the podium to receive a floating trophy and $60 cash.
Speaking after the tournament, Gora promised to have the sponsorship package increased next year.
Senior police commanders Shelton Dube, Linet Chipato and Samson Mangoma also watched the final.
