Talented singer and bass guitarist Edith WeUtonga has urged fellow female musicians to utilise platforms of exposure that are dominated by male artistes to market their art and showcase their talents. WeUtonga was speaking after performing at Jam Session at City Sports Bar on Monday when she shared the stage with other female musicians. She played her guitar while going down to exciting dance skills, which mesmerised fans. As she was performing, she was joined by fellow musicians Tendai Chimombe and Ami Jamanda.

“It is good for us female musicians to utilise such events to challenge our male counterparts and show them that we are also energetic and talented. I was happy when Tendai and Ami joined me on stage. People enjoyed it and this is evidence that we can penetrate these male-dominated spaces and make a mark,” she said.

Jam Session started early this year and has been dominated by male performers. Event organisers said the event was getting bigger with artistes doing well while promoters have been supporting the initiative.

Next week Mutare-based promoter and businessman Isau Mupfumi will grace the event.

Mupfumi said he was looking forward to the session that has become a hit in Harare showbiz.

“I have been reading about it in the newspapers and as promoters we have to support each other. I wish to take the same concept to Mutare so that we assist musicians from that area. It is being done for a good cause,” he said.

Mupfumi said it was good for musicians and promoters to support the event as it brings back forgotten musicians to the limelight while it also gives upcoming musicians a platform to breakthrough.

“They need our support and we are happy that Chinoperekwei has come with an idea that brings some of these artists on the limelight,” he said.

Biggie Chinoperekwei is the brains behind Jam Session and he said it was an honour to have one of the respected promoters in the country coming to grace the event.

“Mupfumi is one of the respected promoters in the country and his appearance at the event will be an honour to us. We wish to work with promoters from different provinces to push our artistes forward,” he said.

Mupfumi’s visit comes two weeks after award-winning promoter Daniel Masaiti from Marondera graced the event and donated $500 towards the growth of the session. The event has hosted artistes like Njerama Boys, Hosiah Chipanga, Elijah Madzikatire and Cde Chinx who have not been on the limelight for a long time.
