‘We’ve 2 years supply of water’

Gweru City Council has assured residents of adequate water supplies over the next 24 months, as its supply dams are 87 percent full.

The chairperson of the City’s Environment Committee, Councillor Tawanda Magidi, informed a full council meeting that there was enough water in the supply dams.

“Dam levels at the city’s four supply dams have increased considerably in the past month, giving the city a water supply cushion of two years,” he said. “Raw water in our supply dams – Gwenoro, Whitewaters and Amapongokwe and Ngamo- is averaging 87 percent.”

Cllr Magidi said there was need for ratepayers to pay their water bills religiously.

“We expect our residents to pay their water bills on time so that water supplies can be maintained,” he said. “There is also need to use the water sparingly.”

Cllr Magidi said council was pumping a maximum of 65 megalitres a day to residents and plans were underway to increase the capacity to ensure consistent water supplies.

He said there was an urgent need to invest in water infrastructure such as pipes to curb losses of treated water.

Over the years, Gweru’s water problems have been worsened by power outages, obsolete water pumps and pipes.
