CHICKEN Inn midfielder Genius Mutungamiri has admitted that his side can put up a strong challenge for the league title this season.
The Gamecocks may lose some players to outside clubs with South Africa and Tanzania the most likely destinations.
Chicken Inn finished in seventh position last season after being in the title conversation for more than half of the season.
Mutungamiri said his teammates have learned from their mistakes and will return much stronger this season.
“We had a good season last year, we lost seven matches, fewer than the number of matches which were lost by the champions. Our biggest problem was that we did not convert our chances, ending up drawing matches or conceding a last-minute goal.
“We spoke about it at the end of last season and it is clear that we have to pull up our socks when it comes to scoring goals. One thing I believe for sure is that we do have a chance this season,” said Mutungamiri.
Rumours spread from the end of last year that several key players were linked with moves elsewhere. The players include goalkeeper Donovan
Bernard, midfielder Sherpard Mhlanga, and energetic winger Michael Charamba, who is attending trials at Tanzanian giants AS Simba.
Veteran Danny Phiri was reported to have rejoined the Gamecocks from Bulawayo Chiefs.
The duo of striker Brighton Makopa and defender Kelly Shiyandindi were also said to have joined Chicken Inn.
Joey Antipas who once coached the team in what was their most successful era was re-appointed as head coach, replacing Prince Matora.
Mutungamiri who joined the team from Bulawayo City scored five league goals and one cup goal will be hoping that he takes his form to another level in what will be his second season with Chicken Inn.
