WHAT CAN A TRILLION DOLLARS REALLY BUY?

SAN FRANCISCO. A trillion dollars is an enormous amount of wealth for any one person to hold.

So huge that it’s hard to really fathom.

For context, if Elon Musk spent US$40 every single second, it would take him over 790 years to spend a trillion dollars.

If he broke this number down into physical cash and laid one-dollar bills end-to-end, the line would stretch roughly 97 million miles, which is further than the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

America’s national defence budget is around US$1 trillion. So too is federal spending on Medicare, or the GDP of Switzerland or Poland.

It’s 1,000 billionaires or 1 million millionaires. It’s equivalent to the combined fortune of 1,000 Dr Dre’s or 500 Taylor Swifts or roughly 167 Mark Cubans or nearly 10 Bill Gateses.

It’s enough to buy 25 million Tesla Model Ys or 77 billion copies of Forbes or 2.5 billion gallons of milk.

Looking back in time, one billion seconds ago was October 15, 1994.

A trillion seconds was 29,000 B.C., when the Earth was frozen in its last ice age.

Size wise, it’s a stack of 100 trillion $1 bills reaching the earth to moon and back 14 times.

With one trillion dollars, you could purchase entire major corporations, millions of homes, or even entire national economies.

Here is what you could buy with this vast sum:

Entire Corporations and Brands

• Major Tech and Auto Giants: Musk could buy iconic companies like Coca-Cola and still have billions left over to buy multiple auto manufacturers, such as Ford, GM, and Volkswagen.

• Global Franchises: You could purchase massive entertainment or retail operations; a trillion dollars is enough to acquire almost any publicly traded company, or the entirety of a retail giant like Walmart.

Real Estate and Infrastructure

• Millions of Homes: With a median U.S. home sales price of roughly US$403,200, he could buy approximately 2.5 million homes across the United States.

• Entire Cities or States: You could buy every single house in the state of Hawaii, or acquire the land and entire real estate of a small to mid-sized country.

• Mega-Projects: Musk could fund massive infrastructure overhauls, such as building hundreds of supertall skyscrapers or entirely new cities equipped with 100% renewable energy.

Physical Assets and Luxuries

• Thousands of Mega-Yachts: He could buy thousands of top-tier superyachts.

• Entire Professional Sports Leagues: He could buy out every single franchise in the NFL, NBA, and MLB combined.

Global Initiatives and Philanthropy

• End Global Poverty: According to global economists, he could fund initiatives aimed at ending extreme global poverty or eliminating massive medical debts.

• Fund Space Exploration: He could establish permanent human settlements on the Moon or fund massive particle colliders to advance human physics.

• Wipe Out National Debts: He could wipe out the cumulative trade deficits or significant portions of sovereign national debts.

• How many weekly grocery trips could US$1 trillion pay for: 5,9 billion.

• The number of childbirths $1 trillion could cover the cost of:

32.1 million.

• The number of children that could be raised from birth to age 18 with $1 trillion: 4.3 million.

• The number of students whose four-year college education US$1 trillion could fund: 7.7 million – Forbes/Agencies
