What has become of this world?

THE world we live in has increasingly become dangerous. Rarely does a day pass without media reports of ghastly crimes like murder, kidnapping and rape. This is a clear sign that society is fast becoming a terrible place.

However, there are some who believe the world is generally becoming a better place to live in. Well, I guess this group chooses to focus on the positives while ignoring the negatives.

It is not a secret that more crimes are being committed now compared to decades ago.

 Sexual assault

I am terrified when I think about lustful men who go to the extent of attacking — verbally and physically — innocent and defenceless women.

They do this to fulfil their selfish desires. Girls and women can no longer dress as they wish because they are afraid of the rogue elements, which, like vultures, violate their rights.

This group of uncultured men behave like predators and we are the prey. Their disgusting actions have made it difficult for many women to face society with confidence.

 Murder

We have some psychopaths who are killing people for no apparent reason. The murderers have left many in pain. Almost each family has in one way or another lost a relative, friend or neighbour to murder. Some teenage mothers kill their children after falling out with their partners. This is abominable.

 Drug abuse

Drug and substance abuse, especially among the youth, has been on the rise. Apart from ending up with serious mental health challenges, people who abuse drugs can also experience health complications like lung and stomach cancer, and kidney failure.

It is sad that we continue to lose future leaders to drugs. There is need to have stiffer penalties for drug dealers who are corrupting the innocent minds of children by selling illegal substances to them. Drugs do not relieve stress or make you perform better in class or sports; they destroy you. Nothing good comes out of them.

It is the same with alcohol. It is important for us all to take part in shaping a safer world for everyone.
