What must I change this term?

Youth Focus with Dr Manners Msongelwa

Every new school term gives students another opportunity to improve themselves. Success at school does not only depend on intelligence, but also on discipline, attitude, and good habits.

Many learners begin the term with excitement, but along the way some bad habits prevent them from reaching their goals. This term, students must ask themselves an important question: “What must I change to become a better learner and a better person?”

One of the most important things students must improve is their reading habits. Many learners only read when tests or examinations are close. This weakens understanding and affects performance. Good readers become confident speakers, writers, and thinkers. Students should develop a daily reading routine by reading textbooks, novels, newspapers, and educational materials. Reading widens knowledge and helps learners perform better in all subjects.

Students must also avoid bad friends. Peer pressure has destroyed the future of many young people. Some friends encourage bunking lessons, disrespecting teachers, fighting, drug abuse, and laziness.

A true friend should motivate others to work hard, behave well, and dream big. Students should choose friends who inspire them to succeed rather than those who lead them into trouble.

Another area that needs improvement is handwriting. Poor handwriting can cause students to lose marks even when their answers are correct. Teachers may struggle to read untidy work, especially during examinations. Good handwriting shows discipline, patience, and seriousness. Students should practise writing neatly every day, spacing their words properly and forming letters clearly.

Lastly, students must stop bunking lessons. Missing classes leads to poor understanding of concepts and poor academic performance. Every lesson is important because teachers explain key ideas that may not be easy to understand alone. Learners who attend lessons regularly gain confidence and stay ahead in their studies. Discipline and punctuality are important qualities for success in life.

In conclusion, every student has the power to change and improve. By developing better reading habits, avoiding bad company, improving handwriting, and attending lessons faithfully, learners can achieve great success this term. Change begins with a personal decision, and the best time to start is now.
