The festive season falls into the summer holidays, which means plenty of time to braai, and a laid-back approach to entertaining. Being outdoors, in the warm weather, at home with friends or family, you can finally slip into those casual threads.
Stylish polos and t-shirts in bright colours, or brilliant white are fitting for the Braai Masters. Round-neck tees with funky prints are cool, but plain white or navy v-necks look equally as slick, as does a button-down shirt left untucked and open at the neck.
These all go well with knee-length chino shorts or combat shorts and low top sneakers, loafers, sandals of the leather variety, and flip-flops.
For ladies shorts and skirts of all lengths are relaxed and summery when paired with pretty blouses and tops. Summer dresses are also a favourite, especially in exotic prints and colours, and paired with sandals.
The New Year’s Eve party is the party of the year and culminates the festivities. The night is all about glitz and glam with champagne popping and huge celebrations that pull out all the stops.
It makes for a vibrant night for the ladies who can go all-out in sequinned, glittery and embellished cocktail dresses that make you look like a million bucks. Colours for the night include gold and silver, and anything that makes you stand out.
Shoes and bags, embellished with jewels, sequins and glitter, crank the glamour up a notch, as does bold makeup in metallic shades, especially on the eyes. Guys can also make a mark depending on what kind of party they attend. On the high-end, a tuxedo is the height of sophistication with a bow tie and cummerbund. Keep it classic in black but there are more stand-out options like sequinned details on jackets, or accessories in contrasting colours.
Of course there is no harm in loosening up the tie on the dance-floor later in the evening. For a more relaxed approach to welcoming the New Year, a smart casual look will work but you can also make a statement in bold colours and prints.
The thought of all the fabulous looks for the season certainly adds to my excitement of the festivities to come. So here’s to a season of unforgettable clothing and celebrations!
