WHAT’S in a hairstyle?

Well, if you are sungura legend Alick Macheso, there is a lot that goes with your hairstyle.

The 57-year-old music icon unveiled a new hairstyle over the weekend that has left fans and critics buzzing.

Macheso, who usually spots medium-length hair, surprised fans with neatly braided cornrows.

One fan joked:

“He’s 57-years-old young teenager. Alick Macheso is slowly replacing Snoop Dogg.”

Last month, Macheso also surprised his fans by bringing back his classic perm hairstyle from his early music days, showing his flair for reinventing himself.

Reactions online have been a mixture of humour, admiration, and playful comparisons.

Some fans praised his boldness and creativity:

“Baba Shero turns to R Kelly. He’s slowly replacing R Kelly. 10/10 king of Sungura, age is just a number.”

Another fan said:

“It’s a bold statement. Macheso is signalling that he’s still very much in the game, challenging stereotypes about age and style in Zimbabwe’s music scene.”

Another commented: “Razor Wire is a brand, he knows how to attract media. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, boom, Baba Shero with the braids.”

Others added a humorous touch, blending admiration with local slang:

“Zimbabwe is the only country that stresses God, after all these years, he decided to surprise us today.

“He’s already passed mid-life crises; we can safely say end-of-life crisis,” said a commentator.

Others blamed Macheso’s youthful and energetic dancer Majuice.

“I blame Majuice, Baba Shero refuses to age. Kufurirwa hakuna zera zveshuwa.”

Attempts to get an official comment from Macheso’s team regarding the new hairstyle were unsuccessful, as they appeared reluctant to speak on the matter. His daughter Stacy recorded a video in which she “apologised” to the nation for her father’s hairstyle.

Fellow artist Stunner, who is now based in the UK, jokingly said he had lost his crown to Macheso but vowed to come back and reclaim it.
