Whawha 0-0 Triangle
WHAWHA felt second assistant referee Stella Ruvinga denied them a “genuine” goal by Nelson Maziwisa four minutes before full time when she flagged his strike partner Albert Matewu offside in yesterday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Ascot Stadium in Gweru. Maziwisa, who was initially in an offside position with Matewu, latched onto a back pass by a Triangle defender and raced towards goal. He fired past Triangle goalkeeper Ashley Rayners, but Ruvinga flagged Matewu for interference. The incident drew the ire of the Whawha technical department led by technical adviser Lloyd Mutasa, with some officials invading the pitch in protest, forcing a four-minute stoppage.
A visibly disappointed Mutasa refused to comment about the incident, saying he did not want to talk about issues he had no control over. “We came here wanting three points but it’s unfortunate it wasn’t our day. As for the disallowed goal, I wouldn’t want to talk about things that I don’t have control over because it would seem like I want to give an excuse for the result,” said Mutasa.
“Such things happen and such is Zimbabwean football and we can’t do anything about it.” Triangle gaffer Kelvin Kaindu, whose side had a fair share of chances including a penalty miss by Tawanda Muyendi in the 43rd minute, was equally disappointed by the result. “This is not good for us because we really wanted to collect maximum points. You can see that we were the team which was attacking more as we had better chances and more corner kicks than them,” said Kaindu.
It was the hosts who took the initiative on a windy and chilly afternoon with the first real chance coming in the 12th minute when Maziwisa gained possession in the Sugar Boys’ half and squared to Roy Useni, who skied his effort from the edge of the box.
The visitors’ first real chance came in the 25th minute when Pasca Manhanga’s cross was headed wide by Makundika Sakala. Triangle were awarded a penalty when Nigel Gandari felled Manhanga in the box, but Muyendi’s effort was saved by Stanley Chakwana in goals for Whawha before the rearguard cleared its lines.
In the second half, Whawha again started on the ascendancy and could have found the opener in the 52nd minute when Maziwisa broke loose, but chose to cross the ball instead of shooting, leaving keeper Rayners to easily deal with the danger.Thereafter, there were few chances until the 86th minute disallowed goal.
