Wheelchair basketball trials on today

WHEELCHAIR Basketball of Zimbabwe (WBZ) president Walter Ndlovu will be in Bulawayo to select the Southern Region women’s team today.
Ndlovu will be looking at coming up with a provincial team of at least 10 players who will travel to Harare for the final selection of the Zimbabwe national team.

The Zimbabwe team will be trimmed to 12 players and four officials and these will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, for the Wheelchair Basketball World Cup qualifiers in August.

Some of the countries that will take part in the qualifiers are the hosts, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.

The Zimbabwe women’s team has never played any international match either competitive or friendly since Independence.

But Ndlovu is optimistic of doing well in South Africa saying they have good players who can carry the country’s flag high.

‘‘We might have not played any international match since Independence but we can match anyone both physically and mentally. The team we will pick will carry the country’s flag high,’’ said Ndlovu.

He however bemoaned the lack of winning bonuses to motivate the players to scale dizzy heights.

‘‘Our players need winning bonuses of at least $100 a player which is not much especially when representing your country. If they can get such winning bonuses then we can perform wonders and bring glory to the nation,’’ he said.

Some of the players from Bulawayo who are likely to make it the national team are Molene Muza, Deliwe Moyo and Thandiwe Ndlovu.
