The qualifiers for the event featured Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Gambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe fielded Dorcas Hwatira and Molin Muza in the women’s category. The two lost in the first round of the competition to South African players who were the eventual winners and will be competing in Korea.
Hwatira lost 6-0, 6-1 to Rose van der Meer while Muza was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Celia du Toit.
They went on to lose the doubles to du Toit and her partner Mabel Mankgele 6-0, 6-0.
Hwatira and Muza won their last match against Kenya but it was already too late.
Wheelchair Tennis Zimbabwe Association vice president, Olga Chisango, commended the team for their efforts despite their defeat.
“The team gave a spirited performance especially the win against the Kenyans. We have to take into consideration that we did not have adequate resources and equipment for training. The girls were informally trained by other team members and spent very few sessions with a professional coach as we could not afford the coaching fees,” said Chisango.
