Is it accurate to say that our fellow female students are escorting men to Harare night clubs in exchange for money?
Are our girls really in such need?
Do they change over time, and is poverty a factor?
Is it a university experience?
I understand that you have a lot of questions, and it’s even harder if you are a parent with students in higher education. It used to be uncommon to see young ladies drinking freely and in public at bars. But now it is the accepted practice.
In fact, it is now considered taboo for girls to abstain from drinking. I know this is amusing, but trust me, young girls now imitate their fathers’ drinking habits.
This week, I will be a little more direct because we can’t make a frog pretty by putting lipstick; bad is awful. Last week, a man and a supposedly girl’s scouter’s audio discussion was widely circulated on social media. The discussion revealed to the female students that they go out at night and get paid for escorting various males to Harare’s nightclubs.
The payment amounts, which range from US$50 to US$300, look very alluring. But how would a parent react if they witnessed their college-aged daughter clubbing?
What I do know is that a sizable portion of college students who need to supplement their financial resources turn to temporary and part-time employment.
But regrettably, a higher proportion are seemingly engaged in the sex industry, primarily serving as escorts. Last week, I said that because of their poor decisions, students are a tragedy unto themselves.
Because we continue to make mistakes at the expense of those who are responsible for our welfare, we have started to create our own bad luck. Female students this week are in the news for the wrong reasons. They are determined to be false in regard to the clubbing charges, and I think they need to alter the narration in any case. Girls no longer cook like their mothers; instead, they now drink like their fathers.
We continue to make poor decisions despite our parents’ best efforts to teach us all the appropriate lessons, teach us right from wrong, and explain options and consequences.
Women who smoked in the past did so in complete privacy. They smoked in private spaces, such as restrooms and dim corners of bars. Additionally, that has altered as more women can now be seen puffing without concern for the public’s prying eyes. Due to increased access to equal rights and a cultural shift, women are now more likely to engage in activities they enjoy rather than those they find repugnant.
I didn’t write this story for the sole purpose of entertainment. It is to serve as a message to all the young ladies out there: those in the universities and also those planning on gaining admission.
These things are more prevalent in colleges these days as some university girls want to be noticed by all, as being a “fancy” and “classy slay queen”.
It is surprising how we go into the universities, and get distracted and influenced by bad peers who change our main focus of being in school.
I implore female students to make the right and careful choice of friends, they shouldn’t just go for looks as they deceive, they shouldn’t go for first impression as well, because someone can always make a good first impression of his or herself but deep down that person is a lion.
It is better to make a thorough research on the person before tagging him or her as a friend. This is because a friend can make or mar your future. Fellow female students, repent by night or perish.
If I may ask, who is responsible for behaviour and good order in college?
It was a taboo to find girls in clubs and spending time away from home. Of course the gender proponents will argue that time is flying, freedom should be given to everyone.
But a patriarchal society remains, that women should be home and act like women. Most of the activities we are doing as students are leaving us with eggs on our faces and we have no defence to that. Fellow students, the internet never forgets and it will never forget, female students are topping the wrong race. Our parents, guardians and authorities cannot remain complacent when resources are wasted.
The girls have changed the narration of academic to money spinning opportunities. If we don’t discipline ourselves, the world will do it for us and a disciplined mind leads to happiness and an undisciplined mind leads to suffering. For many, college will be one of the first times where you truly feel like you have real freedom.
And while it is thrilling to get your first real taste of freedom it can also be daunting, after all, suddenly it’s all on you to figure out and manage.
One thing that surprises me, such students, you will see them during the day, acting normal and by the night, they will be stray animals.
Will all the freedom, as a student you have to maintain the right, equilibrium between class, studying, responsibilities, free time, money management, free time and time with friends are all new aspects of life that everyone is trying to figure out.
Life at college is not black and white. College fuels your desire to navigate the grey areas, finding the answers to life.
In college, it all seems to happen at once. Maybe it is the first time, you don’t have a schedule or a parent telling you what you cannot and can do or you are trying to make friends while getting good grades in harder classes. The big part of freedom in college is where you take ownership of your time and what you choose to do with it.
Some people want to focus on their studies, while some focus on their social life. I have no problem with what you want to prioritise apart from your friends or roommate because your college experience is unique and what you choose to get out of it is up to you.
Most of the girls are now the most popular and mischievous, where some are smoking dagga, taking drugs, attending wild parties and worst clubbing.
Once you get to college you will grow more independent, whether you are coming from a humble beginning or a rich family, your independence will expand by each passing day. You become the master of your own schedule.
The unfortunate reality is that many female students depend on nightclubs to make ends meet.
The myth that is going around on social media leads us to believe that female students are acting inappropriately at night. Most students mistakenly believe that going to college will make them successful, but in reality, success comes from taking initiative and working hard.
Students, please allow me to introduce myself. This week I published a tragic article about female students who work as escorts at night.
If you educate one female, you educate the entire country.
But if what is happening to these girls is any indication, the entire country is in trouble. Ladies, let’s keep our names in the hat.
