WHEN TSOTSI CAME TO TOWN

PRESLEY CHWENEYAGAE, the South African actor known mainly for his role in the movie ‘Tsotsi,’ was no stranger to the local film industry.

Presley died in South Africa yesterday at the age of 40.

He was part of the cast of the award-winning local movie ‘The Gentleman,’ which was written and directed by Joe Njagu.

The movie is about a young man thrust into a moral dilemma who is forced to choose between saving his dying pregnant wife or going against his beliefs.

It hit the local screens in October 2011.

The award winning movie featured some of the big names in the local showbiz industry.

It featured business tycoon Philip Chiyangwa, Munya Chidzonga and a former Miss Malawi Cutepie Chibale.

It was a sweeping story of love, corruption, deception and social degradation.

In the movie, Chiyangwa played the role of Mr Rogers, a Zimbabwean businessman based in South Africa.

Munya played the roles of twin brothers, one staying in South Africa and the other in Zimbabwe.

Munya won a NAMA for best actor for his role in the movie.

Other actors who featured in the movie were Precious Makhulumo (Amakorokoza actress), Patrick Mabhena (Izolo Yizolo actor), Willis Wataffi (musician), Charles Muzemba (Estate Blues actor), Tonderai Hakuna (Lobola), Elijah Madzikatire (Neria) and Sithandazile Dube (Miss Matofotofo) as well as Amakhosi theatre students Moreblessing Majola and Mthandazo Moyo.

The Gentlemen was also nominated for Best Director and Best Cinematography in the foreign language category at the American awards.
