Where effort blossoms into beauty

Andrew Mangwarara

THIS past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting a truly exceptional garden at Aunty Miriam’s home in the affluent Belvedere suburb of Harare.

With two dedicated gardeners, the space is always in immaculate condition, a testament to what passion and effort can achieve.

Entering the property, you immediately notice the ingenious use of every available space. The design is full of clever ideas that create visual interest and delight at every turn. The vibrant colours of the various plants, set against the backdrop of crisp white pots, make the garden feel alive and joyful.

The garden feels like a natural extension of the home, with small, colourful plant beds scattered throughout, each one drawing your eye.

The space feels mature, thanks to a careful selection of unique, rare plants and various garden ornaments.

A striking line of white pots along the driveway adds a touch of elegance. The use of pots also offers a practical advantage, allowing plants to be easily changed with the seasons.

Aunty Miriam has truly created a world of wonder.

I was particularly impressed by her beautiful staghorn fern (platycerium bifurcatum), a plant that grows on a tree bark and requires consistent watering to thrive.

Another unique specimen is the massive and beautifully branched ponytail palm (beaucarnea recurvata).

The garden is exceptionally tidy and weed-free, with a lawn that could rival a golf course.

Many of the plants have been chosen for their beautiful flowers, adding to the garden’s allure.

A wonderful collection of orchids, many in full bloom, adorns one corner and even the area around the washing line is made beautiful with a clever arrangement of pots. It is clear that no space has been overlooked.

Hidden behind the staff quarters is a stunning water feature, a carefully designed space of serene beauty.

The sight of goldfish swimming gracefully adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Ultimately, this magnificent garden is proof that with dedication and effort, you can create something truly spectacular.
