WHITE City Stars Athletics Club founder Manuel Mpofu says preparations for the sixth edition of the club’s Open Track and Field Championships are on course, with organisers ready to welcome athletes to White City Stadium on Saturday.
The championships get underway at 8am and are expected to bring together athletes from different parts of the country for a full day of competition.
Mpofu said the organising team was satisfied with the preparations and was looking forward to staging another successful edition of the championships.
“We are ready for the event and everything is coming together well. We are looking forward to welcoming athletes to White City Stadium and staging another successful edition of the championships,” said Mpofu.
The meeting will feature the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, mile, 3 000m and 5 000m, while the 4x100m and 4x400m relays will also be contested.
The long jump will provide the field event component of the championships.
Now in its sixth edition, the competition has grown from a club initiative into an event that attracts athletes beyond Bulawayo, giving competitors an opportunity to test themselves against athletes from different clubs.
For emerging athletes, the championships provide valuable competitive exposure, while established competitors can use the meeting to assess their form as the athletics season progresses.
Mpofu has said the competition is aimed at creating opportunities for athletes to compete, improve and move closer to achieving their ambitions.
Athletes and clubs are required to complete their entries before the deadline, with no registrations being accepted on competition day.
Entry fees have been set at US$3 per event for senior athletes and US$2 for juniors, while relay teams will pay US$5.
With preparations now at an advanced stage, the organisers are confident of delivering another competitive athletics showcase when the country’s athletes converge at White City Stadium.
