Why Are There No Mobile Casino Apps in African Countries?

Today, we have mobile apps for everything from shopping to entertainment. However, one area where there is a gap in the African market is in mobile casino apps. Despite the global popularity of these apps, their availability in African countries is limited. Let’s explore why this is the case.

Apple’s Policies Are More Relaxed

Apple, known for its stringent app policies, has rules that make real-money gambling apps more accessible than the Play Store. Developers can list their apps in the App Store as long as they are licensed, regulated, and geo-blocked. This would make the proliferation of mobile casino apps in the African market easier. However, there’s a catch.

But Its Market Share is Small

Despite this policy, Apple’s footprint in Africa is small. As of 2023, iOS holds only about 13.27% of the smartphone market share across the continent. Android’s massive presence overshadows this small percentage. Because of this, even Apple’s relaxed restrictions have little impact on the broader availability of mobile casino apps in Africa.

Android’s Dominance with a Limitation

The real game-changer in terms of smartphone usage in Africa is Android. Approximately 85% of all smartphones in Africa are powered by Android as of November 2023. The leading brands include Transsion (Itel, Tecno, Infinix), Samsung, and Xiaomi. This widespread use of Android phones would ideally be a perfect market for mobile casino apps. But here’s where the main issue lies.

Google’s Play Store Policies

Unlike Apple, Google has stringent policies regarding real-money gambling apps. Google’s Play Store only permits listing such apps in a few African countries like Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Moreover, these listings come with strict licensing requirements. One might wonder why the policies are so restrictive.

The reason often ties back to the regulatory environment in the respective countries. This may not be as robust or clear-cut as needed to support widespread legal gambling apps. This cautious approach by Google means that many potential markets still need to be tapped.

Regulatory Challenges

The limited rollout of mobile casino apps on Android can be attributed to the varying regulations in African countries. While some nations have clear and strict gambling laws, others might lack the legal framework. This leads to a fragmented market where only a handful of countries can legally host real-money gambling apps. leaving a significant gap in the market.

The confluence of a small iOS market share and restrictive Google Play Store policies is why mobile casino apps are scarce in Africa. Technology and legislation need to align for mobile casino apps to become more widespread. The vast potential of the African market for mobile casinos remains largely untapped.
