the first time this year after coming second in the Kobil Rally of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Whyte, the reigning ARC champion who was driving a Subaru Impreza N10, was beaten into second place in the tough three-day rally by Jean-Yves Ranarivelo of Madagascar, according to reports from Dar es Salaam.
In third was young Zambian driver Mohammed Essa while former African champion Conrad Rautenbach of Zimbabwe settled for fourth place in a Subaru Impreza N16.
By finishing fourth in Tanzania, Rautenbach surrendered his lead in the ARC Drivers’ Standings to fellow Zimbabwean Whyte who is gunning for his third straight ARC Drivers’ crown. Whyte, who was co-driven by fellow Zimbabwean Phil Archenoul, went into the weekend’s Kobil Rally of Tanzania placed second in the ARC Drivers’ standings behind Rautenbach with 76 points, 17 behind the latter. But the 50-year-old driver served Rautenbach with an “eviction order” at the top of the ARC Drivers’ Standings after coming home ahead of him in the Tanzanian event at the weekend. This is the second time that Whyte has managed to beat Rautenbach in this year’s eight-round ARC series after having earlier beaten him in the fourth round of the tough continental championship – the KCB Safari Rally of Kenya – in June.
And Whyte once again got one over his Zimbabwean rival in the Kobil Rally of Tanzania which first saw him finishing second day of the event on Saturday lying in second place behind Ranarivelo. The results in Tanzania have now set the scene for what are likely to be two intriguing last rounds of the series in Rwanda (September) and Madagascar (November).
