SPURNED that he had been denied permission to marry a second wife, a Bulawayo man failed to keep his temper in check, slapped his wife and landed in police cells.

Jothan Juru (27) of Nketa suburb tried to convince his wife, Emmaculate Tamai (20), to allow him to marry a second wife. But the polygamy proposal was turned down by Tamai who could not fathom sharing her husband with another woman.

Juru viewed this as utter disrespect of his tradition and he resorted to violence, slapping the mother of one and ended up behind bars.

Appearing before Western Commonage magistrate Lungile Ncube, the wife beater pleaded for lenience from the court.

“I never intended to hurt her, anger took over me when she refused that l marry another wife, thus l ask my wife and the honourable court to forgive me,” said Juru.

The magistrate warned him not to use violence to solve his marital problems and slapped Juru with a $100 fine.

Prosecuting for the State Kenneth Shava said on December 23, the couple had a misunderstanding after Juru asked his wife for permission to marry another woman, who happened to be his girlfriend at the time.

After being turned down, the accused assaulted his wife, leading to his arrest.
