Wife-bashing mayor in court

CHITUNGWIZA mayor Phillip Mutoti, who allegedly assaulted his wife accusing her of stealing his $50 at the height of a domestic dispute, yesterday appeared in court.

Mutoti (44) was charged with domestic violence and harassment when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Rekina Dzikiti but was not asked to plead.

Ms Dzikiti remanded him out of custody to July 20.

Allegations are that on March 14 this year at house number 343 in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, at around 11am, Mutoti had a misunderstanding with his wife, Alice Kuvheya (31).

The court heard that Mutoti accused his wife of stealing his $50.

Mutoti, it is further alleged, left the house in a huff as he went outside with Kuvheya in tow.

Further allegations are that, Mutoti in a fit of rage charged towards Kuvheya, got hold of her and dragged her inside the house.

While inside, the court heard that Mutoti punched and slapped Kuvheya who fell to the ground.

It is also alleged that he kicked and choked her.

Kuvheya had to escape from further assault after their security guard only identified as Mr Mutambirwa intervened.

Mutoti allegedly threatened to kill her and is still making the chilling threats.

As a result of the assault, Kuvheya sustained painful ribs and chest.

This led Kuvheya to report the matter to the police leading to Mutoti’s arrest.

Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya prosecuted.
