A 50-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo woman who had filed charges against her husband for infecting her with HIV yesterday dropped the charges in court after he promised to take care of her until death.Ethel Ngwenya of Old Lobengula reported her husband to the police in September last year after undergoing an HIV test, which proved she was positive.
She said Gilbert Mpofu from Chief Sikobokobo area in Nkayi infected her with HIV when they got married in 2007.
Western Commonage magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo was about to charge Mpofu of deliberately transmitting HIV when Ngwenya withdrew the case.
“My husband has apologised for his behaviour and admitted that he did wrong. He promised to take care of me until death. Our families counselled us and I decided to drop the charges and forgive him,” she said.
Prosecuting, Kingston Mukanganwi said sometime in May 2007 Mpofu got married to Ngwenya who did not disclose his HIV status and engaged in unprotected sex with her.
“When the complaint went for testing in September 2013 she discovered that she was positive. She reported the matter to the police leading to Mpofu’s arrest,” said Mukanganwi.
