A BULAWAYO woman yesterday dragged her husband, who is a mental patient to court demaing to be paid $69 a month for the upkeep of their three children. Kuthanda Ndebele of Nkulumane said she wanted her unemployed husband, Kholisani Ndebele who receives treatment from home, to provide for his children.

Medical reports were produced in court showing that Ndebele goes to Ingutsheni Central Hospital once a month to receive medication.

Kuthanda told Magistrate Adelaide Mbeure that even though Ndebele was a mental patient, he should pay maintenance as he was in a position to work and take care of his children.

“He is in a position to work and fend for his children because he is on some medication. He was mentally disturbed in 2009 and now he is ok as he sells firewood for a living. The only reason why he does not want to take care of his children is because his mother said that they are not his,” said Kuthanda.

Ndebele’s mother, Nelly Ndebele, said her son was a mental patient and she was taking care of him.

Ndebele confirmed that his mother was taking care of him.

He said he does not get much from selling firewood which he does when he is well.

“If I’m well I fetch firewood and I get a $1 per load,” said Ndebele.

Magistrate Mbeure dismissed the application.
