HIGHLANDERS fans called for a boycott of their team’s league match and pulled it off as thousands converged at their club house leaving Barbourfields resembling an empty shell.
The Dynamos fans are trying it this weekend – calling for a boycott of the Harare Derby showdown against CAPS United at Rufaro.
The big question is – CAN THEY PULL IT OFF?
The DeMbare fans want to boycott the big match to protest against club owner Bernard Marriot, the man they blame for their team’s spectacular fall from grace.
Dynamos are in the relegation zone and this week they fired coach Lloyd “MaBlanyo” Chigowe and appointed a new technical department headed by the nomadic Saul Chaminuka.
This followed a defeat to Triangle, who are now under the guidance of former Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe, at the weekend.
“We have been monitoring the goings-on of the club, and it’s clear that something is amiss. We have lost our pride and glitz, and it’s time for a change,” the Dynamos Harare Chapter fan group said in a statement.
“Dynamos, Chazunguza, The Glamour Boys, Mutunhu Usina Mago, 7 Million, Haina Ngozi and more importantly ‘Team Yenyika’ can only be measured by their success in the prized asset, that is the Premier Soccer League title.
“We harbour no ambitions of taking over control of the club, but we feel those at the helm of the club have also contributed to the muddy state we find ourselves in.
“A Dynamos FC Board and its Executive ought to have a decorated and proven record by now and (immensely) bettered the legacy left by their predecessors.
“The Board and current executive have dismally failed to lead us in that direction, and we have lost our confidence in the entire setup.”
“We deserve a sound environment at Dynamos FC where we are privy to the direction with which our club is headed.
“Given recent court proceedings that saw board chairman Bernard Marriot Lusengo retaining a controlling 51 percent stake of the club, we wish to know the remainder of the 49 percent stake of the club and in whose capable hands it lies.”
Questions are being asked if the Dynamos fans, who went public with their campaign to boycott the game, will realise their dreams or they will be snubbed by their colleagues?
What is not in doubt is that CAPS United will be there in their numbers as they want to see how new coach Ian Bakala is improving their team after a poor start.
The PSL are also offering free tickets to lucky fans as a way of promoting the match.
The PSL’s promotional offer encourages fans to participate in a social media campaign for a chance to win tickets.
The promotion requires a fan to post a picture wearing either CAPS United or DeMbare’s regalia to win a ticket.
