Win or bust for Chevrons

FOLLOWING a bruising 69 run loss to Pakistan on Sunday, the Chevrons walk into a defining afternoon today. Beat Sri Lanka and they seal a place in the T20I Tri-Series final. Slip again and the entire campaign tilts out of their control.

Zimbabwe handled Sri Lanka well in their first meeting last Thursday, winning by 67 runs. Another victory lifts them to four points, leaving the Lankans stranded on zero, which means even a shock result against Pakistan later in the week would not be enough for Sri Lanka to climb above Zimbabwe.

The task is tough. Sunday’s defeat exposed the Chevrons’ biggest cracks, especially with the bat. Only Ryan Burl stood firm, carving an unbeaten 67 from 49 balls while the rest of the top order folded. Captain Sikandar Raza managed 23 and the pair were the only batters who reached double figures.

Pakistan’s spinners ran riot, with Usman Tariq taking 4 for 18 and claiming a stunning hat trick. Tony Munyonga fell for one, followed by Tashinga Musekiwa and Wellington Masakadza for golden ducks.

Raza said the team must look inward as they reset for today’s contest. He stressed that accountability, sharper plans and improved handling of spin will decide their fate.

“I thought apart from the last over, it was a typical Pindi wicket. I knew runs would be scored. But when we found ourselves in early trouble, someone needed to pick up responsibility. You have to respect that the opposition will come with better plans. If you’re not ahead of the game, teams will find you out. Game against SL we’ll regroup.

There needs to be accountability. The manner we’ve played spin we can’t carry on like that. We’ll help each other out and find our feet,” said Raza.

Burl’s unbeaten knock came in a chase of 196, with Zimbabwe eventually bowled out for 126 in 19 overs. Despite the heavy loss, they remain second on the table with two points and in control of their own path to the final.

Sri Lanka still have an outside chance, but only if they win both their remaining matches. Zimbabwe need a straight win this afternoon to book a Saturday date with hosts Pakistan.

The match at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium starts at 3pm.
