Wishing for another’s plate

Fadzayi Maposah-Correspondent

I am sure all of us have had that moment when you felt that you were in between people that you love.

At that moment it is almost so difficult to take sides deep inside; you just wish that the issue will resolve itself.

Some crazy wishful thinking if you ask me.

I never used to really understand the concept of the elephant in the room.

There are situations that happen when I sometimes think, it is not only an elephant, but the whole herd.

Despite being invisible, one can literally feel the elephants moving about with many thuds that can leave a trail of destruction.

There was a time I invited my friend to supper.

When I asked her what she would want to have, she suggested I decide what to prepare for her.

So I decided that it would be chicken stew, sadza and some kale better known as covo or choumoulier in this country.

I am a good cook.

This I know!

It is not pride; I am just being assertive.

I know that I can cook so well that I can prepare a totally vegetarian dish and those who love meat keep eating hoping to bump into the meat which is not there.

Being a woman getting towards menopause I am like a teenager.

Lots of mood swings; you might turn up at my door holding this article in your hands thinking that you will get me to the kitchen and be shocked.

I will not roll my eyes at you like some teenager but I may just say “You should have come yesterday, today I have no energy for the kitchen!”

But then I digress…

This same friend that I am referring to had driven me to pick up my grandmother so she knew that my paternal grandmother, VaMamoyo (of the Moyo totem) would be part of the company.

When we were seated and grace had been said and we were beginning to eat my friend, Mazvi asked VaMaMoyo if she was enjoying what I had cooked.

My grandmother said she was enjoying her food but there was one thing that she was not happy with.

I was curious but did not ask lest Gogo accuse me of meddling in her issues!

If there is one thing that I know about old people can be highly unpredictable.

Mazvi is the one who asked Gogo what she was not happy about.

“The pieces of meat in my plate,” Gogo responded.

I could only widen my eyes.

Our helper looked up from her plate, one of the girls suddenly developed something on her throat that needed some clearing.

Awkward silence.

My friend apologised to Gogo and then asked Gogo which pieces she would have preferred having so that next time we were better informed.

The answer that came from Gogo shocked us all.

She said the pieces of meat in my friend`s plate were the exact ones that were her favourite.

My friend laughed and said only if she had known before she started eating, they would have exchanged plates.

Gogo said she preferred less sadza than the one that was in my friend’s plate.

After I had said that I had taken note of her requests, Gogo was her bubbly self again and the dinner went on well.

Later as my friend and washed up we recalled the meat pieces’ issue and laughed over it especially when I said that I had initially asked Gogo to dish for herself from serving dishes because we never seemed to get right what she really wanted and in what quantities.

She had refused saying it was too much unnecessary work and she appeared “greedy” by dishing for herself.

She would be content with whatever she was given but it appeared that there was something always missing…

I thought of this chicken pieces’ story when early this week, someone delivered a package.

It was all nicely wrapped up and I thought it was a late birthday present being a February baby or even a St Valentine’s Day present, wink, wink!
