FOUR Zimbabwean footballers have been retained by Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2026/27 season, providing a major boost for the country’s growing contingent in English football.
The English Championship side confirmed that midfielder Marshall Munetsi, winger Tawanda Chirewa, striker Leon Chiwome and youngster Ethan Sutherland will remain part of the club’s plans after all four were included on Wolves’ retained list released ahead of the new campaign.
Munetsi returns to Molineux following a loan spell with French side Paris FC, but his future remains the subject of speculation. The Warriors midfielder is reportedly attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, while Paris FC have cooled their pursuit of a permanent deal after initially expressing interest in keeping him.
Chirewa has also returned to Wolves after spending the second half of last season on loan at Barnsley. The highly-rated winger faces an uncertain future, with the club yet to decide whether he will challenge for a first-team place or head out on another loan spell.
Meanwhile, promising forward Chiwome remains at Wolves despite enduring an injury-hit campaign that limited his opportunities last season. The club continues to regard him as one of its exciting young prospects.
Development team player Ethan Sutherland has also been retained and is expected to continue his progression within the club’s youth ranks.
While Wolves have confirmed the quartet will remain under contract for the upcoming season, the transfer window could still bring changes, particularly for Munetsi, whose performances continue to attract attention from clubs seeking Championship and Premier League experience.-
For Zimbabwean football fans, the retention of four players at one of England’s historic clubs is another positive sign of the country’s growing influence on the European football stage. -@FungaiMuderere
