A 19-YEAR-OLD woman who bashed her 75-year-old grandmother while under the influence of alcohol appeared in court yesterday facing physical abuse charges.
Morisha Dube appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso and said she was sorry that she had meted her frustrations on her grandmother following a misunderstanding with her boyfriend.
Dube pleaded guilty to the physical abuse charge and was remanded in custody to Monday next week for her plea recording.
Prosecuting, Mitchelle Chiboiwa said Dube was not a first time offender.
“It is not Dube’s first time to come to court. She was in court recently for abuse or ill treatment of children,” she said.
The prosecutor did not elaborate further in the case of abusing minors.
However, in the latest matter, the court heard that on Thursday, Dube came back home in Nkulumane drunk and became violent. She first proceeded to where her grandmother Egness Dube was and started insulting her using vulgar words.
When the grandmother tried to calm her down, she started assaulting her with open hands on the face.
Dube pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that she was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
“Your worship, I did not mean to beat my grandmother but I was drunk. I had a fight with my boyfriend so I lost it and poured it out on her. I’ll never do it again, please forgive me,” said Dube.
Magistrate Chimiso told Dube that what she did was wrong and disrespectful.
“Why do you beat up old people? You are bringing in misfortunes in your life with this behaviour of yours. The last time you were in court I told you to go and behave and yet you are here again which means you have not learnt your lesson. You will be remanded in custody and you’ll see how prison life is,” he said.
