Vusumuzi Sithole (29), of 8009/12 Pumula North was appearing before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Richard Ramaboea facing a charge of physically abusing his wife Mrs Mpendulo Sithobile-Sithole (27).
He was being charged with severely assaulting his wife with fists at their matrimonial home last week, accusing her of denying him conjugal rights and cheating on him.
The court asked Mrs Sithobile-Sithole what she wanted done to her husband and she said she wanted him to go to jail so that maybe he might change his behaviour as he was beating her in front of children everyday.
The wife is a bursar at a primary school in Pumula East and the couple has two children.
Sithole, who is an electrician and employed by Delta Beverages in Belmont, pleaded guilty to abusing his wife.
He pleaded with the court to be given a non-custodial sentence, saying his employer had promised to promote him at work.
He told the court he assaulted her because she was refusing to have sex with him and he thought she was cheating on him with another man.
Sithole left the court in stitches when he said their six years of marriage had been difficult for him because his wife was refusing to have sex with him.
Sithole was then sentenced to 12 months in prison of which six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
He will serve an effective six months in prison.
The State’s case as presented by Ms Fiona Ncube was that on 1 February, Mrs Sithobile-Sithole knocked off from work and took the couple’s eight-year-old daughter to a clinic in Old Pumula.
While still there, Sithole arrived home and phoned her on her mobile phone asking about her whereabouts.
Sithole then insulted her over the phone accusing his wife of leaving their minor child alone at home.
When she arrived home at 5.30pm, Sithole started assaulting her with fists all over the body accusing her of cheating on him.
She sustained injuries on the head and face and went to hospital where she was treated and discharged.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Sithole.
