Woman burns stepdaughter with red-hot metal cup

Midlands Bureau Chief
A WOMAN from Kwekwe has been told she faces jail following her conviction for burning her six-year-old stepdaughter with a red-hot metal cup for allegedly wetting her blankets. Appearing before Kwekwe resident magistrate Taurai Manwere facing one count of domestic violence over the weekend, was Lydia Mapokotera, 26, of house number 38C/7 Mbizo, Kwekwe. She was convicted on her own plea of guilty.

“The accused is found guilty of domestic violence and is remanded in custody to Monday (today) for sentence,” said Manwere. Prosecutor Michel Daraja said on May 8 at around 10AM, Mapokotera called her stepdaughter who was playing outside the house with her friends into the house.

He said when the girl, who is in Grade One, got into the house, Mapokotera asked her why she had urinated in her blankets the previous night. “The accused told the complainant that she wanted to assault her. The accused then placed an empty metal cup on a hot stove,” said Daraja.

After getting satisfied that the metal cup was hot enough, he said, Mapokotera removed it from the stove before burning the child on the pelvis and right thigh. Daraja said the girl sustained burns and was referred to Kwekwe District hospital where she is being treated.
