Woman claims maintenance from three men

Court Reporter
A Harare man yesterday brought the court to a halt after revealing that his wedded wife he never stayed with was receiving maintenance from three different men. Melody Kadzere (30) is accused of leaving her elderly husband after signing the marriage certificate only to return two months later to claim maintenance for herself.

The court heard that Kadzere is also receiving maintenance for two children she had with different men.

Lawrence Machingura (57), a city of Harare employee appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe for defaulting payment of maintenance fee accruing to US$600.

The court heard that Machingura left for Namibia before the marriage certificate ink was dry and the two never stayed together.

In mitigation Machingura told the court that he wedded Kadzere on March 22 and she sought a maintenance claim on May 27.

“I instituted divorce proceeding but Chitungwiza magistrate court granted her US$200 as interim relief pending finalisation of divorce.

“I attempted to have the maintenance discharged but to no avail.

“I am diabetic and hypertensive.

“She is receiving US$150 and US$40 maintenance fees from two other men.

“She is just taking advantage of my ill health after luring me into marriage barely two weeks after I met her,” he said.

Mr Mahwe sentenced Machingura to four months imprisonment wholly suspended on condition that he pays all arrears by December 31.
