A Harare woman has been granted a peace order against her former boyfriend after alleging that he repeatedly threatened and harassed her for refusing to resume their relationship.
Marvelous Chaminuka approached the Harare Civil Court seeking protection from Michael Grastine, telling the court that his alleged conduct had left her living in fear and was beginning to affect her work.
She said that after she ended the relationship, Grastine allegedly refused to accept the breakup and continued pressuring her to reconcile with him despite her repeated refusals.
“He forced me to love him back after I rejected him,” she said.
Chaminuka said Grastine even contacted her employer in an attempt to persuade her to resume the relationship.
“He called my boss telling him that I should come back to him,” she said.
She said police attempted to intervene, but Grastine allegedly refused to provide his residential address.
Chaminuka said Grastine refused to take back the property he had given her, saying they were old.
“He said he no longer wanted them and instead wanted his money back,” she said.
She said she offered to pay him US$377 for the property, but he refused to accept the money.
Chaminuka said she feared that the continued harassment was damaging her professional relationships.
“I live in fear now, he is creating tension with my bosses at work,” she said.
She also alleged that Graston threatened to track her down if she tried to avoid him.
“He even threatened me, saying, ‘my phone will take me to where you are even if you try to run away from me,’” she told the court.
After hearing the submissions, presiding Magistrate Hannah Fazilahmed granted a peace order in default, barring Graston from threatening, harassing or communicating with her and from visiting her workplace or home.
