Police have arrested a 32-year-old woman from Mvurwi after she allegedly strangled her newborn baby before burying the body in a shallow grave near her homestead.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of Thandiwe Kangara in connection with a case of infanticide which occurred on March 4 at Chihwe Village 2 Farm in Mvurwi.
According to police, investigations revealed that Kangara allegedly gave birth alone to a baby girl before strangling the infant with her hands.
She allegedly buried the body in a shallow grave about 10 metres from her homestead.
The matter came to light after a juvenile who had returned from school noticed that the suspect’s pregnancy was no longer visible and alerted a relative.
This prompted further inquiries by family members, leading to the case being reported to ZRP Vivelkia Police Post on March 5.
Police subsequently arrested the suspect and exhumed the infant’s body.
The body was taken to Guruve Hospital mortuary where it is awaiting a post-mortem.
Police said investigations into the matter are continuing.
